“Why is it, my shadow-striding friend, that we don't fear dreams? We lose consciousness, lose control, things happen with no apparent logic and abiding by no apparent rules.... We don't fear dreams, but we do fear madness, and death terrifies us.”

Ever wonder why we surrender to the chaos of dreams every night without fear, yet panic when waking life loses control? Brent Weeks captures this strange human paradox so poetically: “Why is it, my shadow-striding friend, that we don't fear dreams? We lose consciousness, lose control, things happen with no apparent logic and abiding by no apparent rules.... We don't fear dreams, but we do fear madness, and death terrifies us.” How do you find your calm when life feels unpredictable? Let's chat in the comments below! 👇✨
About this quote
Life often asks us to walk through uncertainty, much like drifting into the surreal landscape of sleep where nothing makes logical sense. Brent Weeks reminds us that we readily surrender our consciousness every single night to the unknown, navigating bizarre dreamscapes without a shred of panic. Yet, when waking life mirrors that same lack of control—when chaos strikes and our plans unravel—we panic, fearing madness and dreading the unpredictable nature of our own existence. This profound contrast holds a gentle, empowering piece of life advice: embrace the surrender. Just as you trust your mind to wander safely through the dream world, learn to trust your resilience when reality feels illogical and overwhelming. Fear often stems from our desperate need to hold the steering wheel of life, forgetting that some of our greatest healing and growth happen when we finally let go. You have survived every dark night and every confusing season so far; your inner strength is far more capable of handling the unknown than you give it credit for.
