We often build high walls in the name of self-protection, mistakenly believing that shutting the world out keeps us safe. C.S. Lewis beautifully captures this universal human tragedy: in our clever attempts to avoid pain, we inadvertently lock out the very things that have the power to heal us. We defend ourselves against vulnerability, turn away from hard truths, and reject deep connections out of a fear of being hurt, ultimately starving our souls of the nourishment they desperately need. Life's greatest gifts—genuine connection, inner peace, and transformative love—cannot reach a heart that is permanently on the defensive.
