“Because I want to know! Sometimes, you can use what you know, but that's not what counts most. I want to know everything there is to know. Not because it's any use, but for the pleasure of knowing, and now I demand that you teach me everything you know, even if I will never be able to use it.”

Do we only learn to achieve, or can we learn simply for the joy of it? Jacqueline Harpman reminds us of the magic in pure curiosity: “Because I want to know! Sometimes, you can use what you know, but that's not what counts most. I want to know everything there is to know. Not because it's any use, but for the pleasure of knowing, and now I demand that you teach me everything you know, even if I will never be able to use it.” What is something random you've learned lately just because you love it? About this quote
In a world that constantly demands productivity, efficiency, and a clear return on investment, Jacqueline Harpman’s words remind us of a forgotten joy: pure, unfiltered curiosity. We are so often conditioned to learn only what can be monetized, applied, or leveraged for success, as if the human mind were merely a tool for output. But true personal growth and lifelong learning run deeper; they stem from a childlike wonder about the universe and a desire to simply absorb the beauty of existence for its own sake. Embracing this philosophy is a profound form of self-love and liberation. When you give yourself permission to learn something simply because it captivates your soul—whether it's the history of the stars, the mechanics of poetry, or the habits of deep-sea creatures—you reconnect with your most authentic self. Knowledge doesn't always have to serve a practical purpose to be valuable. Sometimes, the mere pleasure of knowing is enough to make life feel infinitely richer, deeper, and more magical.
